Orthoceras Fossil

The Orthoceras fossils date back to the Ordovician period (over 400 million years ago) and are one of the earliest recognised animals. Though they are among the earliest forms of life, this class of nautiloid is still to this day considered to be one of the most intelligent forms of ocean life. The name of this ancient cephalopod means straight horn, referring to it's long, straight, conical shell. These ocean-dwellers are ancestors to the modern day squid, and like the squid can range anywhere between a few centimetres to over 11 metres in length!
